Claret

Back in England with lots of admin work to do. I have some pictures to remind me of the holiday, like this one:

A typicall route start at Claret, the local cliff where good climbers go to remember what it was like when they were beginners!

Fine

Sir,

Enclosed is a receipt for the £10 fine i had the pleasure to find on my windscreen last monday. I thank you for your effort in making Nuneaton a better place to drive to and park, but i must say that having a well lit panel explaining that parking is not free after 6pm would go a long way in getting public support for your good work.

I'm sure you'll understand that i've had made certified photocopies of the fine and the receipt. Just in case there was some poorly lit fine prints that i would have failled to read, or some problem in the post. One can never be so sure in these times when it's so easy to be mistaken for a cash cow.

You might be pleased to hear that i will choose to take my salsa dance classes to another Midland town. It is an activity i do to relax afterwork, i don't want to have to deal with unpleasanteries with like the matter at hands. So i will take my custom to the club in Hinckley, or maybe Leicester. But rest assured that parking convenience will be a factor in my choice.

Yours,

Remi Gauvain

Facture

Close call !...

I changed the fork on my bike on saturday and set off for a test ride on sunday, paying lots of attention for anything dodgy coming from the front of the bike. So when the rear derailleur snapped in two, i was quite surprised:

Then i realised that for once i was lucky! This happened as i was cycling slowly uphill, not racing downhill on rough ground. And i was only 5 minutes driving away from home, so i was rescued in a matter of minutes.

On a less happy note: I am waiting to hear from the job, rush to change the rear mech before wednesday, receive the rear shocks for the mystery machine, succeed in removing the rear brake drum on the mystery machine, hear the outcome from last week's walk, find the time to finish up the kitchen and gaz fire surround (both major must do before end of year goal), finalise my x-mas trip to France (pending on item 1 above), and i'm not even touching on the pile of admin papers to do...

Wish me luck! Advice on getting enough quality sleep when stressed most welcome...

Sir, your indicator lights are pink!

That's what the MOT inspector (controle technique automobile) told me last week. I got the skoda taxed and registered - it used to be a disabled car. Having to deal with government bureaucracy reminded me on why i like it in England. Then came another kind of pettishness: "for profit" bureaucracy! MOT testers who abuse their power by forcing unnecessary repairs on motorists.

The car failed it's MOT for a leaky rear brake cylinder (fuite a cylindre de frein), a missing CV joint clip (un clip de joint de cardan manquant) and "indicator light of the wrong colour" - white i was told (clignotants blancs au lieu d'orange).

I did all the repair myself except, you've guessed it, the indicator lights. They looked orange to me, so i took the car to a spare parts shop on the way to the testing station to ask if there was a different type of bulb i should use. But they confirmed that they looked right and shouldn't cause any problem.

Well, i've never heard of a bureaucrat coming back on his words so when i left the car at the MOT station i told them to change the bulb if they failed the test.

On my return, i was told "Sir, your indicator light were pink"! In conclusion, i need a different MOT station for next year. And even though i had to pay for the new light bulbs, i was pleased with myself for having asked them to give me back the old ones.

PS: sorry no picture, i don't have use of Allan's digital camera anymore...

Thank you Tom !

2 weeks ago Tom was at home in Australia:

Last weekend we did the Original Mountain Marathon. This is what it looked like on day 1:

In spite of being very tired, and having injured his feet Tom kept going and we finished the race. Here he is just 4 minutes before crossing the finish line:

So a huge thank you for Tom without whom i would have missed this cherished event two years in a row...

Job Interview

L'interview hiers s'est tres bien passee

The job interview yesterday went really well

If it all goes well between my boss (who found me the job) and their boss (with whom i got on well and who gets on very well with my boss...) then i would be well paid to continue the work that i'm already doing for the startup, with more resources, access to a bigger client base, etc... Still let's not count our chicken...

Son partenaire a repondu "yes it's true, well done, we deserve it".

It's a new record !

It's the longest!

And i've already made one and a half cake with less than a quarter of this monster!

Planche a voile

So much to do, so little time

In the past 2 weeks, i have:

  • Worked 72 hours in the sports shop,
  • Been to Paris and back for a 2 days consulting mission,
  • Translated the relevant pre-meeting papers in English,
And still managed to:

  • Run 4 times, up the hill i can see from my window (1h-1h1/2),
  • Go to the climbing wall each week,
  • And salsa lessons 3 times (!),
  • Finish tiling and painting the kitchen wall after the plasterer made it look flat,
  • Have lunch with my Mum who was visiting a friend in Paris, and also grab a cup of tea with her before she left.

The not so good news is that the consulting mission didn't go exactly to plan, there will be a delay which means that i won't be going back to Paris as planned next month. It's a shame, i would have been there at the same time as Guigou, we would both have stayed at Pascale's. She was already planning to take us to a recording session of Radio France as well as to her mean stretching class.
Can't have it all!

As a bonus, click here to check out what i had to do the day before flying of to Paris.

Laughter is best

Remi: Why am i attracted to interesting people with personnality?
Remi: how about trying the decorative plant approach?
Remi: nice to look at but no conversation
Remi: hmmmm
Remi: i'm too poor for the trophy wife approach anyway
Emu: ha ha, and youd be very unhappy
Remi: lol
Remi: i've had lots of windows opened at the same time,
Remi: most of them made me laugh
Remi: so i've been laughing continuously for 15 minutes now!

More courgette on the menu tonight: another cake and some papillote de courgette et barbet - made with haddock as i wouldn't know where to look for barbet here. Great food but the kitchen looks like this:

Triffid Cake

I've missed the seeding season for my veggy patch, except for the courgettes. At the end of August, they were impressive:

They are so big i call them triffids. With this one, i made a cake, a ratatouille and a lamb curry. Here's what the cake preparation looked like:

There's 3 more of these monsters, still growing :))

Crate Challenge

American kids are better !

I was talking to one of the counselor from the camp where i do climbing instructing. Kelly's from Australia, she doesn't like what passes as Summer here and she finds that the kids here are not as good as what she expected. Well, she's a fitness instructor the rest of the year so it's no surprise if she's disappointed by the lack of energy and motivation that English kids have these days. She said that next year, she'll go to the US because, in her words, "American kids are better". They choose to go to camp.

I managed to sneak a picture to show you what i do at the moment. I had to frame it so that we don't see children face/feature. The guys you can recognise on this are 2 counsellors, 23 years old Graham and 24(?) years old Noamh. Pronounce Nieve, it's proper Irish, the kind that would not bow to the Queen...

Counsellors also come from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, the Netherlands... Not many English, and if like Graham they want to work abroad, soon camp YHA will be able to teach kids foreign languages as well as other outdoor activities.

Now some more news to fill you in on the last couple of weeks. The mystery machine is still not running properly. I took it to the garage that converted it to LPG, it's one hour driving away but if they can't tune the engine then no-one can. Meanwhile, i've bought a 10 year old Skoda Felicia for a song. The challenge is to sell it when i get the Mystery Machine back without loosing any money. Now that i don't waste time sorting out the car, I have picked up the diy where i left it 6 weeks ago.

Meanwhile, my trusty mountain bike has learnt a trick or two from the car and started to rebel. I have changed the back wheel, the chain looks a bit tired and the fork must be replaced before the biking season starts. Because i bike when i cannot climb, that means the rainy season here.

I had to do a bit of work on the bike because colleagues from the sports shop had organised a ride from the store in Sheffield to the one in Stockport 10 days ago. Off course, things didn't quite go to plan as we were supposed to use the Mystery Machine to get there. As the previous garage was unable to tune it, we defaulted to a colleague's 205. Last minute panic to arrange a roof rack meant that we missed the start, here's a picture of us on an empty car park, 20 minutes too late.

And one from the ride:

To finish off with the stream of July Problems, the old computer that i planned to use to run a database for work couldn't be coerced out of hibernation. Perfect excuse to get a quieter, smaller, faster one from ebay. We're talking £100 for a P3 with 160Gb HD and 512Mb RAM. It's running on Ubuntu, with MySQL and other software from the Linux community. Yes, i can be a geek sometimes...

As you see, i didn't have much time these past few weeks. First thing to go, as usual, was sport. So when Mathieu from the ski mountaineering expedition 3 months ago pulled out from our project in the Swiss Alps in 2 weeks time, i wasn't too disapointed. No mountaineering then... Oh well I need a holiday!

Mechanical Problems #1

On the way back from a bike ride, at dusk on the motorway, the engine started to cut out... Brrrr! I made it back, i'm used to drive old cars in various state of disrepair.

Wanting to avoid another costly repair, i checked the engine myself. The mechanics who had changed the head gasket had tightened the spark plug so much that i broke the first one i checked:

Back with a new spark plug, i looked for other problems and found that the botch repair i did on the air filter housing - to get me to the garage last time with the back firing problem - could be causing the fault: the gaffer tape wasn't holding the two pieces together anymore, instead it was flapping inside the duct, reducing airflow to the engine. This time i glued it - again to get "to the garage":

By then i was thinking that it was wise of me to have abandoned engineering for a more intellectual career. Not surprisingly, this was not the cause of the problem and the car is now at the garage. Hearing my tale, the mechanics suggested a faulty temperature sensor, something that is quite common after a blown head gasket...

The story doesn't quite end there. As i was emptying the car, i noticed liquid dripping under the engine bay: a gas leak! - my car runs on LPG- So i can count myself lucky that this was found before bringing the car to the garage, not after!

Hmmmmm

A bad day

Went climbing with Mike. The wind was so strong that we couldn't climb anything interesting. We left as the rain arrived.
On the way back, my car broke down. The - alleged - mechanics who fixed the head gasket didn't reconnect the bottom hose to the radiator properly, it came off and with it the cooling water. I had to call the rescue services. The driver of the rescue truck left saying that my day couldn't get worse. Then Zidane lost his marbles.
Had i brought a camera to the hills with me, i could have taken an amazing picture of the advancing front of a shower coming towards us as we sat on top of the cliff. It felt as if we were looking through a pane of glass, amazing. Instead, i'll leave you with this shot of a bumble bee taken 2 weeks ago during a walk in the Peak District with French friends

Confidential

I cannot tell you much about my meeting in Paris today, it's confidential stuff. All i can say is that it was good and promising. I mean, the meeting was quite successful for an opening meeting. And if the preliminary project is successful, there may be some interesting career development in there for me.

To celebrate, here are some pictures of me taken during the BSCI conference in Brussels last November:

Worryingly, i feel that i look terrible in these. So do I:

  1. Blame the photographer?
  2. Get some training on public speaking - stressed pic when i'm on the panel, smiley pic when networking?
  3. Get more sleep the night before important, stressful, first-time work events?

Pas terribles, hein? Je me demande si je dois:

  1. Dire que le photographe est nul?
  2. Ameliorer ma diction?

Bad Attitude

The latest British Mountaineering Club magazine, summit, has arrived today. There was an article about an accident at Burbage north, a small cliff in the Peak District. The climber was experienced, but didn't wear a helmet and sustained serious head injuries when he fell off. His feet got entangled in the rope, resulting in an inverted fall: the climber, held by the rope, ends up upside down. Quite often the head smashes on the rock when this happens.

I started to wonder if i should wear a helmet when climbing single pitch bolted routes in France. I always wear a helmet in England, i wear one on multi pitch climbs in France - for fear of falling stones - but not on short crags. Weeks ago, I was wondering whether I should take a ski helmet during the Chamonix to Zermatt traverse. I always wear one when mountain biking, i wore it during the 2 hours ride to Nottingham this past 2 weeks and start to feel guilty when i cycle to town without one.

But what really got me thinking was the last article, about attitude to belaying. There are very few belayers whom I blindly trust, and when someone i don't know belays me, i don't want to fall. Last Sunday, i even made a major mistake that i think comes from my lack of trust in the belayer: i grabbed the gear as i was falling on a trad route in the peak. The writer argued that for fear of upsetting their climbing partners, most climbers don't dare to voice their concerns about their belayer's attitude, lack of concentration or general level of skills.

We live in a world where we are made to feel guilty if we don't use the latest technology to protect ourselves, but where basic social skills are forgotten to the point that telling the person who holds your life in his/her hands, through the rope and belay device, is considered bad attitude.

I think those displaying bad attitude are the ones who can't face to the fact that belaying someone is taking responsibility for their lives if something goes wrong. And climbers who don't dare to tell their belayer that they expect best practice from them have a bad attitude too.

In the future, climbers may place a bouncy castle at the bottom of climbs and not use a rope. Why not? That's probably quite similar to deep water soloing. I will be heading to more remote cliffs, climbing with those who enjoy the social side of roping up with another person, trusting your life into their hands, and communicating accordingly.
